Background of the Study

Financial constraints are a significant challenge for many students pursuing higher education, particularly in developing countries. In nursing education, where students often face additional costs for textbooks, uniforms, clinical placement fees, and other study-related expenses, financial stress can negatively impact academic performance (Oluwadare & Akinyemi, 2024). Financial difficulties can lead to increased dropout rates, reduced motivation, and decreased academic engagement among students (Ogunyemi et al., 2023).

At Ogun State School of Nursing and Midwifery, nursing students face significant financial pressures that may hinder their ability to fully engage with their studies. Financial challenges may prevent students from accessing necessary educational resources or attending important clinical placements, ultimately affecting their academic success. While there is a growing body of literature on the relationship between financial constraints and student performance, there is limited research on how financial difficulties specifically affect nursing students in Nigerian institutions. This study aims to explore the impact of financial constraints on the academic performance of nursing students at Ogun State School of Nursing and Midwifery.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the significance of financial constraints, there is a lack of focused research on how financial difficulties specifically affect the academic performance of nursing students at Ogun State School of Nursing and Midwifery. Financial stress may negatively influence students’ ability to concentrate, access educational materials, or participate in clinical placements, leading to poor academic performance and low graduation rates. Without understanding the specific impact of financial constraints on nursing students’ academic performance, it is challenging to create interventions that address these barriers effectively.

Objectives of the Study

1. To investigate the impact of financial constraints on the academic performance of nursing students at Ogun State School of Nursing and Midwifery.

2. To examine how financial stress affects students' access to academic resources and clinical placements.

3. To explore students' coping mechanisms in managing financial constraints and their academic performance.

Research Questions

1. How do financial constraints affect the academic performance of nursing students at Ogun State School of Nursing and Midwifery?

2. What impact do financial constraints have on nursing students’ access to academic resources and clinical placements?

3. How do nursing students cope with financial difficulties while pursuing their studies?

Research Hypotheses

1. Financial constraints have a significant negative impact on the academic performance of nursing students at Ogun State School of Nursing and Midwifery.

2. Students facing financial constraints experience difficulty accessing necessary academic resources and clinical placements.

3. Coping mechanisms mitigate the negative impact of financial stress on nursing students' academic performance.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nursing students at Ogun State School of Nursing and Midwifery and will evaluate the relationship between financial constraints and academic performance. The study will not explore the broader socio-economic conditions of students, nor will it examine financial support programs. Findings may not be applicable to other institutions with different financial structures or support systems.
